RACING AT TRENTHAM.

THE ftUTUMN MEETING.

THE GOLD CUP

SI'ATI STRANGER'S FINE EFFORT,

GLARE BREAKS A RECOED,

The autumn meeting of the. Wellington Racing Club concluded yesterday in fine, though dull, Weather. There was a fairly good attendance, and some excellent racing was provided. The Trentliam Gold Cup, though only attracting a field of three, resulted in a thrilling contest. Concentrate looked to have the favourite, Star Stranger, beaten half a furlong from home, and actually headed him, but Star Stranger finished in great style, and was a neck in front at the finish. Glare, by running one mile and three furlongs, in the Autumn Handicap in 2.102, established a fresli Australasian record, tlio previous best being 2.17 put up by Star Stranger on the same course* .During the day tlio sum of £49,827 10/ was. put through , the machine, compared with £48,881 for the corresponding day lastseason, an increase of £940 10/. This made a total for the meeting of £102,132 against £102,803 10/ for the', previous autumn fixture, a; decrease oJ £071 10/. The High-weight Handicap.

All paraded for the Ngaio High-weight Handicap, and Don Quixote, after his, performance 011 Saturday, when he finished second after being left, was with £1189, wliile Aberfeldy

=(£936) and J£475). we/e .next in -request, while the others were at, long iprices. Cook swerved at thv 'start-and ■■ lost a good bit of ground. Aberfeldy;was ffirst to show out from Audience, Gold|;iike, Pedestal, Don Quixote, Tourist-and-ißorsalene. Passing the . five Aberfeldy- § and. Goldlike were together, followed by fPedestal, Don Quixote, Audience, Vivo f'and Tourist, who was dropping "ba?k-.

! while Mister Gamp was last. Crossing i the top Aberfeldy, Don Quixote and Goto* |like were together, attended by Pedestal, jAudience and Vivo also on terms. There fwas little change into the straight, Don |Quixote tlioa taking charge to win by a: I I neck from Tunbridge, who beat Tourist. w a head. Then came Pedestal, Wenday, land Mister Gamp. Tourist got the tapes tin his mouth and carried them for over |half the journey. . , - • I' Full Feather Wins. | Rational 11. was the only scratching I for'the Hutt Handicap. Panther ( £965), Vali (£855) and Dolomite ( £777) jvere :most fancied. Vali,- who drew' the rails;' |was soon in front from iCharter and Royal Saxon, ...whiJe . Full sFeather had dropped back. Passing the Ifive furlong post Malayan had "charge rfrom Dolomite, Vali, Royal Saxon and JPanther. A Great Race. ■>■■; . 1 Star Stranger' was a hot favourite for. |he Trentham Gold Cup, being entrusted |with over half the investments. Star •Stranger immediately took up the role <"of pacemaker, followed by Concentrate .-and Rapier, his only opponents. There *was' no change /till. w,ell in the straight fthe last time where Concentrate challenged, 'and headed 'Star Stranger, .'but : Gray got to work with his whip and a |rreat linish resulted, Star Stranger, who Responded gamely, - beating Concentrate Jby a neck,jwjth- Kapier five • lengths awav. • ~ Gray rode a great race, and its was :duo to his horsemanship that Star Stranger won. % .The- pair 1 received a great reception on returning to scale. •

f; Another Close Finish.': •, !' Fine Acre was the'only scratching for |he. Muritai Hahdieap.:'FaW. ( Gay Crest ( £1056) and Grecian (.£817) were most in request. • Grecian was'slow pway, Paris showing oiit frqm ; Royal Opera, Kiriana and' Gay Crest;'* J Paris led past the five-furtong post from Kiriana, Royal Opera,-. "Grecian, . Gay Crest fnd St. Melba. There sas no change across the top. Grecian, Paris and Kiriana .were most prominent at the turn with Grattus, Royal Opera, Gay frest,. St. Melba and High Society next. Half way down the field spread across the course and a great finish saw St'. Melba "beat Grecian by half a neck, with Pahu a head away, a similar distance in front. of Koyal Opera, Gay jjirest and Auctioneer. „ • ; The' Two-year-olds. $ Nineteen went tp ■ the post for- the pacific Handicap, Lineage (£009) was favourite, with .the bracket Lady Pam and Sir Lomond ( £880) and Hard Words (£832) next in . order of fancy. Running down .'past, the_ fiye-furlong post the most prominent Pass On, LineAge, Love Song^ien|erdeii ; Jenny Diver and Jason." -Lineage} Love Song, Lady Pam, RapaUoj Jasoh. and Hard Words were first on'jto:tlie course, proper. Hard. Words and. Ladyi Pam were in front a hundred yArcls from home and the latter won by a neck. from-. Jason, who beat Hard.. Words--by . ; half a head. Awaken, RapallO,' Lineage, Jenny Diver, Charmaine and Tenterden 'were next. From the'stands it looked -M' though Hard . Words was undoubtedly second. Gray Wins Again. Taneriri was the only defection from the Autumn Handicap and Vertigern ( £1418), Paquito ( £1180), In the Shade (£1105) and Glare ( £1048). were best backed. Hoylake was slow to move. Billion and Jaloux led out of tho straight from In' the Shade, The Hawk, Vertigern, My Own and Paquito, with Paitofiu and- Hoylake last. Along the ■back the order was Billion, jaloux, Latin Quarter, In "the Shade, .Vertigern, The Hawk and Paquito. • Passing the fivefurlong post Billion and Jaloux were attended by Hoylake, Vertigern, In the Shade, Paquito and Glare. There was little alteration across the top. Billion and Jaloux weye, etiir in front turning for home from Glare, Vertigern, Paquito and Hoylake. . Glare then drew out and ■went on to .win by three lengths from Paquito, with Jaloux half-a length away third. Then came Paitonu, "In the Shade, Jloylake, Billion and Latin Quarter. The time, 2.101, constitutes a now Australasian record. , •• Just before going out*of the straight Paquito (L. J. Ellin) met with interference caused by Vertigern (B. 11. Morris) rolling In, The stewards found it. accidental.

Dead-heat for Second. Eaglet (£824) was favourite for tlie Suburban Handicap, with First Money (£789) and' Riciilield (£705) next in demand. First Money, Richfield, Ciraabue, Miss Ransom and. Goblin Market were most prominent when the field settled down, but First Money led on to the course proper from Royal Saxon, The Raider, Eaglet .and Flair. First Money had the rails, and .about half a furlong.from home came across the lield. He held up one of his hind legs in a manner that .suggested it was broken. He caused some interference to the field, and a good opening was left on the rails for White Fang to come through, to win by a head from Eaglet and Royal Saxon, who dead-lieated for second place. Cimabue, Royal Duke, Flair, and Richfield were next. First Money was all right after lie pulled up and apparently was slightly galloped on when he crossed The Raider, who was just in behind him. An inquiry was held and it was found that The Raider Was interfered witli by First Money. The train,er of First Money is to be advised to warn jockeys who ride, this hOi;se in future to carry their wliiji in their left hand. . The Final Event. The meeting concluded with the Belmont Handicap, for which all started. Havaspot (£I9SO), Mandy (£1307) and Leader (£1100) were best backed. Mandy, Oral, Glenrossie and Hunting Call were the leaders passing the five 'furlong post, Hunting Call, Mandy, Sunkissed and Havaspot were first to reach the course proper, but after passing the false rail Mandy took command and went on to win by a length and a half 'from Lucretia, who heat Havaspot by a neck.
