MANUKAU COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of the Manukau County Council was held to-day, those present being: Mr. F. M. Walters, chairman; Messrs. C. S. McCallum, J. S. Dickson, S. Rickards, L. Gilbertson, J. Luke and S. W. House. ■

Payment of Staff. —Mr. Rickards moved, "That a committee be set up to fix the maximum basis of pay for members of the office staff, with automatic increases until that sum is reached." This was agreed to, the following committee being appointed: The chairman, depirtj--chair-man, clerk, and engineer. Town Planning.—The chairman, deputychairman and Councillors Dickson and House were appointed a committee with power to act in respect to town planning.

Clearing Watercourses. —lt was decided to serve notices on various land owners to remove obstructions in water courses and clear the same to the original depth. Stock Route.—The chairman, the riding member, and county engineer reported re the proposal to take a stock route through the properties of Messrs. Gillies and Gunson, and the dedication of a small length of roadway at the end of Wairere Road to give access to the property recently acquired by Sir James Gunson. The recommendation was that the portion of road be not dedicated until a stock route is secured through both properties. This was agreed to.

Maungaroa Gorge Road. —The engineer reported that the tender of Messrs. Burnside Brothers, at a satisfactory figure, was accepted, subject to the approval of the Main Highways Board for improving the alignment and grades on the Maungaroa Gorge Road (Howick-Manurewa main highway).

Tamaki Bridge—The chairman said so far no reply had 'been received from the Highways Board re a new bridge at Tamaki. Mr. Waters said that for the new bridge over the Whau Creek other public bodies were asked, to contribute. He saw no reason why a similar rule should not be applied to the bridge at Tamaki. It was agreed that the engineer take the necessary steps to get all information re the matter of other bodies being called upon to contribute to the bndge at Tamaki.

Access to Beaches.—Papatoetoe Welfare League wrote expressing appreciation of the assistance given by the council in opening up a road through Mr. W. L. Orr s property to give access to the beaches thereon. " F r ge i the WaT -—The City Council wrote offering .to the council some German, machine guns and trench mortars. The council decided that no action he taken in the matter, the chairman remarking that the City Council should get rid of the guns and keep them out of sight. He added: "The sooner we forget the war the 'better." War Memorial Museum.—Notification was received that the county's contribution to the War Memorial Museum for the present year was £250 16/3.
