MANGERE WATER SUPPLY.

SPECIAL RATING AREA. An important report was submitted to the Manukau County Council to-day by the engineer, Mr. J. R. Page, with reference to the proposed new water supply (scheme. The report stated:

"Investigation and surveys carried out during the past twelve months or more have disclosed the presert anil [respective requirements of the district, and that water is available locally to meet those requirements, also that it is quite practicable to supply a district comprising the greater part of the Mangere riding with sufficient water of potable quality for domestic, agricultural, ;;nd fire-fighting purposes, under good pressure at a reasonable cost. The committee recommended: (l). The creation of a special rating area including all. the residential and many of the agricultural portion of Mangere riding, comprising approximately .3SUO acres, and excluding only distinctly outlying thinly-populated areas, for the purpose of financing the preject. The area suggested includes the two present water supply areas, and any new loan raised would absorb existing loan balances therein. In connection with finance tne prospects of making the scheme largely self-supporcing are good. (2) The establishing o( pumping and chlorinating plants at the shaft and bore which have been sunk on the quarry reserve near Mangere . Mountain, the

building of a reservoir on the top of Mangere Mountain, and the reticulation of the area previously described; and (3) provision for present requirements at the outset and in addition all necessary liberal provision for future development." _ - Mr. F. M. Waters (chairman) said the shaft previously put. down near Coronation Road, did not furnish a supply for that area for more than five or -six years. For that reason further investigations were made by the engineer with very satisfactory results as to the prospects of a permanent supply.' The council adopted the recommendation of the committee.
