Student Prince is iooking rather on the big side. He is again doing- regular work, but is hardly likely to be forward enough to display Iris Lest form at tho Thames meeting. Nella Dillon, who is again being worked by her owner, is being sharpened up for 'the Thames meeting. The daughter of Author Dillon worked nicely yesterday morning without being driven at top. Great Gold is improving under the training of G. Webb and yesterday morning at Epsom gave a good exhibi-tion-of trotting. The pace was not fast, but Great Gold trotted solidly and few novices do even that. Although she did not win Pavlova raced consistently at the Manawatu meeting and finished third in both the Plate and President's Handicap. Her party fully expected her to land the mile'and a quarter, in which she started favourite. Dan Direct and Satinbird were worked out together over a couple of circuits at Epsom yesterday. They were not at top speed, but Satinbird led all the way. Dan Direct afterwards sprinted a. quarter in 355, which is not much good. W. G. Nightingale strapped Evelyn Locanda up yesterday and worked her out two miles. This mare is looking very well, but she worked alone and had" nothing to pace her. The two miles took 4.36. She is entered for the Wellington meeting, which takes-place on Saturday week. Although Eoland has not displayed sufficient pace in his training to warrant the prediction that he is sure to win 'at Hastings, he is probably as good as the average novice. The son of Great Audubon has only raced once this season and perhaps Shaw will pick Up a stake with him. There was very little doing at Epsom yesterday morning and it is doubtful if 'activities have been so quiet for some time. The feAv really fast horse: locally are mostly spelling, as there is little in the near future for them to compete in., unless they go on tour. St. George had no difficulty in winning the Pohangina Handicap at the Manawatu meeting. Seeing that he had gone 3.24 3-5 for one mile and a half and was on 3.55 for a mile and five furlongs, it would have been a surprise had he bet-n beaten. He is in the March Haudirap to-momnv ,it the Hawke's Bay meeting and it looks just as good for him again. He is one of C. S. Donald's team.
