RACING AT TRENTHAM.

WELLINGTON MEETING.! OPENING DAY; TO-MORROW. GOOD FIELE3 ENGAGED. TWO CLASSIC EVENTS. THE CARD REVIEWED. The autumn meeting of the Wellington Racing Club will open at Trentham to-morrow, and with the prospect of sood weather and excellent fields, the fixture should be a most interesting oik. Included in the programme are two classic events, the New Zealand St. Leger Stakes and the North Island Challenge Stakes, and both should provide good finishes. The High-weight Handicap. Eleven have been accepted for in.the Rimu High-weight Hai dicap, a mile and a quarter event, with which the prooranime opens. Aberfeldy has not raced for some time, but in the spring he Tan prominently in high-weight handicaps at Trentham and Riccarton. Wenday should find the, distance more in her favour than at Franklin last week. Gay Crest won the high-weight handicap, one mile, at the Banks Peninsula meeting recently. Borsalene raced well over lurrdles at Taranaki and Wanganui, while Mister Gamp is a pretty useful sort on the flat when right. He finished fourth in a high-weight handicap at-the last Wellington meeting, and subsequently showed up during the running hi the Taranaki Cup and the Paul Memorial at Taranaki. He should be a much-improved horse, and should run well. Tunbridge has won three highweight handicaps on end, and will have plenty of friends. Vivo is stated to have been °-oin<r well at Hawera, but she disappointed in these events at the last Wellington meeting. Glena Bay waa not taken to the-meeting. Auctioneer won the Pukenui Hack Handicap, eight and a.Half furlongs, recently at Rangitikei, and should be the best of those lower down. Most of the money will probably go on MISTER GAMP TUNBRIDGE AUCTIONEER. The St. Leger Stakes. There are no colts engaged in the St. Lecrer, and as fillies and geldings carry B.7?thoee engaged are all in at tjie same weight. Hunting Cry had been withdrawn. Waterline has raced most consistently since he started at tLe last Wellington meeting, when he won the Trial Plate. He was third in the President's Handicap, one mile and a quarter, at Dunedin, won the Abbot* ford Handicap, eeven furlongs, at the same fixture, and eventually captured the Midsummer Handicap, one mile and a quarter, at Riccarton. Jaloux finie led second in the Great Northern Derby, while Duellona, who has won over a mile and a quarter, was second in tbc New Zealand Oaks. Vali has shown form up to a mile, and looks the most liKeiy of the remainder. The chief fancies will probably be WATERLINE JALOUX DUELLONA. A Big Field. The biggest field of the day is engaged in th« Plunket Nursery Handicap. Awaken performed well at the Auckland summer meeting, winning the Nursery Handicap, finishing second to Tenterden in the Criterion Handicap and winning the Sylvia Handicap,.while she was second in the Wellington Stake, and occupied a similar position bchnm Green Linnet in the Nursery Handicap, eix furlongs, at Trentham. Lady Pain won a nursery handicap at ManawaJi and a similar event at the Wairarapa meeting. Hard Words performed well at the last Wellington meeting, being in a place in each of his starts, while he subsequently won a double at Takapima. Charmaine raced well at the last Dunedin fixture, and later won the Middle Park Plate at Riccarton. Tripping annexed the Debutante Stakes at YVoodville, and a nursery handicap at Dannevirke, while Lineage, who scored in the Avondale Stakes early in the season, showed a return to form by finishfirst in ,the Sapling Stakes at WoodviUe. Autopay won a double at the last Wanganui meeting, and is a likely sort. Green Linnet performed well at the last Wellington meeting, and finished second to Hard Words at Taranaki last month, Jenny Diver won at Trentham, and also scored at Napier. She is pretty smart over a short course. Rapallo (who won at Napier Park), Chief Joy and Love may carry most money of the others engaged. The principal fancies ma y be ™™

HARD WOEDS AtJTOPAY AWAKE3T. The Thompson Handicap. The principal event of the day is the Thompson Handicap. Historic is at the head of the list, but one is of opinion that the distance may be a bit short for him. Rapier has not pleased in his track work at Riccarton, but Concentrate ■will have to be considered. He had the Wellington Cup won a long way from home, and should run a good mile. Star Stranger will be better suited by the Trentham Gold Cup on the concluding day. Mervette would only need to be fit to stand a good chance. She won a eprint race at the last Wellington fixture after finishing third in the Telegraph Handicap. Paquito has been galloping well recently, and his eecond to Nightmarch in the Hazlett Gold Cup at Dunedin will ensure him friends. Red Heckle showed that he was approaching his best when he finished second in a fast run seven furlongs at the recent Canterbury Jockey Club summer meeting. He is well fancied in the South. There are others who impress mure than Vertigern, and one is Eagle', after her Avin at Franklin last week. She was brilliant in the spring, winning all three Guineas races, but seemed to lose form ]ater. However, she is now about back to her best, and should take a lot of beating. Great Charter ran well in mile'events at the t la 6 t Wellington meetwhile of the others Paitonu, My Own Taneriri and Full Feather may be the best. The betting will take a wide ran<re, but when the machine closes the best'supported are likely to be EAGLET . RED HECKLE MERVETTE.

The Challenge Stakes. Cimabue is top weight in the Jhallenge Stakes, and he is likely to :jo well, for he has been racing prominently since his return from Australia. However, if the course is firm, the public will probably prefer Paganelli at the weights. He raced on a heavy track when Cimabue beat him in the Jackson Stakes at Wanganui. He is very well just now. Eaglet will probably contest the Thompson Handicap, but if reserved for this event should give a good account of herself. Tenterden won the Wellington- Stakes in good style at the last meeting at Trentham. Cylinder is one that appeals, and he should prove the best- of the two-year-olds. The public may select PAGANELLI CIMABUE CYLINDER. The Silverstream Handicap. Grecian, who has pride of place in the Silverstream Handicap, has run, very consistently recently, and will have a. lot of support. Royal Opera has also been showing good form. Grattus has shown winning ability up to a mile recently, while Fine Acre won a highweight handicap, one mile, at the last Wellington meeting. Havaspot is in the Tinakori Handicap as well as in this event, and in whichever he is raced be should go well. Gay Crest is engage- 1 in the high-weight handicap earlier in the day, while Pahu was third in the Douro Cup and won the Kelburn Handicap, both mile events, at the last Wellington meeting, and he should go well. St. Melba is a useful sort, while Tourist, High Society and Paris seem the. best 'of those lo'wer down. The principal selections when the totalisatoi closes may be " GRECIAN ROYAL OPERA ; PAHU. The Railway Handicap. Meadow Lark, wtio i» top weight in the Railway Handicap, has raced well at Trentham and, despite hie burden., will have a lot of friends. The Raider is reported to be coming back to form, and, if at his best, would be troublesome. > Aspiring has been scratched for this event. Richfield has proved hims-elf a good horse this season, and his second to Meadow Lark in the Telegraph Handicap at the Wellington summer meeting will ensure him support. Moa Bird has been racing well lately, while First Money is very speedy, 'and if all right, will give a good account of himself. Valuation won in open company at Takapuna, and he will be in request, while Hunting Day, after his win at Napier Park, ehould also have a chance. Of the others, Royal Saxon, Flair and Goblin Market may prove the best. In a good betting race most money is likely to go on MEADOW LARK RICHFIELD VALUATION. The Concluding Event. The programme will conclude with the Tinakori Handicap, and the favourite division may be HAVASPOT RULING CHIEF PIAKO.
