TROTTING.
STALLIONS FOR SODIH. F. HOLMES' PUKCHASES. Advice has been received in Invercargill (says "Sir Modred") to the effect that the well-known owner, trainer and light-harness studniaster, Mr. F. Holmes, of Christehurcli, has purchased two new pacing stallions in America, both sires of very reasonabe age. The proposed importations are bred in the purple, as tne few particulars at present available clearly demonstrate. The elder of the pair is the ten-year-old horse, a son of Guy Axworthy, who proved to be America's leading sire of the season. The second purchase is an eiglit-year-old stallion by Canada's famous sire of pacers, Grattan Royal, who has to be credited with a sensational sou in Grattan Bars (1.59). It is understood that there is a strong possibility of oiw of the horses referred to being placed at the disposal of breeders in Southland. In the past Mr. Holmes has been very successful in his selection of American horses for Maoriland, and lie will probably again do well in his endeavour to introduce new and valuable blood. The Grattan Royal horse will be the first of his blood to be imported to New Zealand or Australia, and the Guy Axworthy sire will be the only other of his line, with the exception of Worthy Bond, now in the Auckland district, to figure in Maoriland stud circles.
