Murder Of Son Who Made Her Look Too Old. HUNGARIAN POISON TRIAL. i (Received 11.30 a.m.) BUDAPEST, January 17. The latest arsenic poisoning trial is that of Maria Szendi on the charge of murdering her 23-year-old son because he made her look, too old in the eyes of her young love. Maria Szendi was a popular hostess at tea parties and was one bf the well-to-do peasantry of Szolnok. It is alleged that her husband died of poisoning after thrashing her for infidelity. Her second husband also similarly died after threatening her with divorce. On December 11 the trial was begun of 60 Hungarian women, who were charged with poisoning their husbands in order to obtain their land. In most of the cases, after the husbands had mysteriously died, their widows, having inherited the property, married younger m.ei\ better able to help in the tilling. It was alleged that the women had obtained the poison in the form of love potions supplied by a midwife named Marie Fazekas: The police intended to arrest her, but she forestalled them and hanged herself. One woman calmly confessed that she poisoned her war-blinded husband, "because he was no good to me. I married a younger man who can help me in the fields."
