HEALTH INSPECTOR.
i a DEPARTMENTAL LEVY.
OBJECTION BY LOCAL BODIES
In reference to the Health Department's notification that the board s contribution towards the provision of a health inspector would be increased from £20 per year to £48 10/, the cleik of the Manurewa Town Board (Mr. H. Kay) reported at last night s meeting that he had written to neighbouring local bodies who are served by the sane inspector, requesting their co-operation ir. opposing the increase on the grounds that it was excessive. The Howick Town Board replied that its levy had onlv been increased from £15 £20, rh amount which was not considered worthy of complaint. TheEllerslie Town Board advised that its levy had been increased from £42 to £89, a sum which it considered out of all reason, and further consideration lad been deferred till its next meeting. The Papatoetoe Town Board wrote stating that it had considered the levy too drastic, and made an offer to the Department equivalent to 56 per cent of the amount of the levy. In the course of a general discussion the clerk mentioned that the Department •was quite prepared to let the board appoint its own inspector. The chairman denied the reported suggestion that the board had considered employing the Manukau County Council's inspector. He was of opinion that the hoard was getting good service from the Department and that some increased payment was justified. After further comment it was decided to await further replies before reaching a decision on the matter, and it was accordingly deferred till the next meeting.
