FOUR CANDIDATES.

TRANSPORT ELECTION.

LABOUR MAN" NOMINATED,

DIFFERENCES IN FRANCHISE,

The election for the vacant seat on the Auckland Transport Board on Monday, December 30, will be contested by four candidates. Three candidates had already been announced, and shortly before the time for the receipt of nominations closed at noon to-day the returning officer, Mr. W. St. John Clarke, received the nomination of Mr. Andrew Catliey, of Cam bourne Road, Edendale, The successful candidate will succeed Mr. F. S. Morton as the representative of No. 3 district of the Transport Board area, which comprises Oneliunga, One Tree Hill, Mount Roskill, Mount Wellington, Ellerslie and Panmure. The candidates are as follows; —

Mr. Andrew Catliey, nominated by Messrs. John Park and Thomas Ireland.

Mr. Reginald G. Clark, nominated by Messrs. J. S. Hardwicke, C. L. Slyfield, I. J. Goklstine, Jas. Wood and W. G. Mulholland.

Edward Morton, nominated by Messrs. A. C. Tonkin and Robt. Buchanan.

Mr. George E. Tansley, nominated by Messrs. George Winstone, Alexander Milliken and Hendry Luke.

Mr. Catliey is well known as a supporter of the Labour party. An enginedriver by calling, he- has been in the employ of the Harbour Board and Electric Power Board, having been with the latter body up to the time or the introduction of Avater power in succession to steam for the generating of current in Auckland.

Mr. Clark has for many years been a member of the One Tree Hill Road Board, and was for a lengthy term its chairman. He is also a member of the Power Board.

Mr. Morton is a brother of the former member for No. 3 district, and. is Mayor of Onehunga. Mr. Tansley is a member of the Mount Roskill Road Board.

An interesting fact in connection with the election is that, whereas in the Onehunga and Ellerslie districts voting is according to Parliamentary franchise, that is, by anyone over 21 whoso name appears on the roll, only ratepayers may vote in the Panmure, Mount Wellington, One Tree Hill and Mount Roskill road districts. In the case of the latter group there is still further differentiation, for a ratepayer who may have two or three votes in a road board election may, according to the Transport .Act, exercise one vote only in the election of a member to the Transport Board,
