SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

A band of willing helpers assisted at the Paddy's market held by the Community Sunshine Association last week. Amongst them was Mrs. Fitchett and members of the Women's National reserve, who assisted Mrs. O'Brien and Mrs. Milliken at the jumble stall.

Mrs. J. D. Webster gave a gift bridge afternoon at the J.C.L. rooms yesterday, when Christinas favours were placed on the plates of each guest, fastened in a scarlet bonbon, and red flowers matched for decorations. The hostess wore a cigar brown maroeain, hat with cream ospreys. Among those present were: Mrs. John Fuller, Mrs. Kay Stratton, Mrs. J. Kassens, Mrs. Heath Preast, Mrs. Sands, Mrs. Copeland, Mrs. W. Tugby, Mrs. Smallbone, Mrs. J.. Hopwood, Mrs. Hyauiason, Mrs. F. Taylor.

On Monday evening an entertainment was given by the pupils of Miss Dorothy Mills at the Parish Hall, Birkenhead. The junior pupils recited together "Lady Apple Blossom" and "Vespers," while other elocutionary items were given by Misses Dorothy Mills, Muriel Barton, Vivian Hopkins, Joan Gill, Joyce Hedland, Audrey McKinstry, Beatrice Halliday, Mollie Morris, and Masters Cassic and Mills. Songs were rendered by Miss Helen Taylor, and pianoforte solos by Miss Mavis Hewson, L.A.B. A short scene from "A Midsummer Night's Dream" was given by the older pupils, the characters being: Puck, Morrison CassJe; a fairy, Alison Smith; Oberon, Eileen Neben; Titania, Jean McKenzie. The hall was artistically decorated in ferns and rambler roses.

A series of bridge parties has been held through the winter at Mrs. Bach's home in Bayswater every Monday evening. The object,has been to augment the funds of the Takapuna-Bajswater Boa-ting Club, and last night the opportunity was taken to make a presentation, through Mr. F. Better, to Mrs. Bach as an expression of the appreciation of her kind an* generous act. A beautiful bouquet was also presented to Mrs. Back by Mrs. Edwards on behalf of the ladies'- committee of the boating club. The best score was made b'y Mrs. Watson. The ""Knox Sunbeams," trained by | Mrs. G. W. Bagrie, presented an attractive entertainment at Knox Hall, Parnell, last evening, when they staged a children's operetta, entitled "The Fairy Chain. v The cast of characters was as follows: Prince, Ina Bagrie; Princess, Dacia Bagrie; Ogre, Eileen White; Sprite, Gwen Reece; Fairy Queen, Joyce jones; Cupid, Patricia Hebden; Fairy Violet, Nancy Moore; Fairy Snowdrop, Dorothy Mcintosh; Fairy Lily, June Hebden; Fairy Daisy, Lenora. Scarborough; Fairy Holly, Joyce Smith. The chorus fairies were Jean Claney, Mary Croy, Minnie Kendall, Connie Cole, Moina Rice, Hazel and Nancy Milligan. Peggy Doherty acted as announcer and accompanist. The operetta was preceded by items rendered by the following: "Sonny Boy," by Mr. Jack Davey; duet, "Miserere," Miss Horroeks and Mr. Rumsan; comedy item, Mr. Barnard; solo, "Killarney," Madame Amie Millburn, with violin obligato by Miss Higham. Miss Lillian Braithwaite acted as accompanist.
