MILITARY OBJECTORS.
SERVICE IN ORPHANAGES.
ALTERNATIVE TO DRILLING. AUCKLAND PRESBYTERY APPROVES. "I hope that it will be the last word on the subject, and I have every reason to believe that it will," said the Rev. W. Lawson Marsh, in introducing to the Auckland Presbytery yesterday a proposal which, it is considered, should be a final solution to the problem of finding suitable alternative service for military objectors. Mr. Marsh, who is convenor of the Presbytery's Public Questions Committee, moved, "That the Presbytery of Auckland welcomes the proposal that when exemption from military service has been granted to conscientious objectors, the alternative service should be work at the orphanage institutions of the denominations concerned." "I have been asked," said Mr. Marsh, "if the Presbytery would agree to the alternative service being prescribed as service in our own orphanage institutions. I had no hesitation whatever in saying that I thought, personally, that such a recommendation would be heartily welcomed." (Applause). The motion, which was seconded by the Rev. D. C. Herron, was carried without discussion. "Such celerity disarms me," remarked Mr. Marsh as the next business on the order paper was called.
