SOUTH MAIN TRUNK.
SURVEY WORK DIFFICULT. COMPLETION DATE UNCERTAIN FORMATION AT NORTHERN END; (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") WELLINGTON, this day. The protracted work on the survey of the South Island Main Trunk is nowdrawing to a close, and constructional work is within measurable distance of beginning. Difficult country on the southern end of the new railway link has made the task of surveying and performing grade tests for alternative routes one of more than usual difficulty. Here the survey ha 3 been finished and the grade tests checked, while the route which the new line will follow on this section is now practically determined. In the north, however, work proceeds, and no definite date for completion of the work can be given by the Public Works Department. The northern end, however, sees formation work steadily pushed ahead. A total of IS2 men, about half of them ie]ief workers, is employed here. When the construction will begin on a large scale is mainly a matter f ->r the Government to decide.
