ROSKILL AND THE CITY.

SUGGESTED LINKING. PETITION FROM SOUTH END. The fate of the greater part of the area administered by the Mount Roskill Road Board is being decided by a commission appointed by the Government to go into the petition of the Roskill South Ratepayers' Association. Mr. J. G. L. Hewitt, S.M., is chairman and the other members are Mr. A. X. Campbell and Mr. W. G. McClintock. The association is asking that one par£ of the district, about three-qiiarter»i of the whole area, be joined to the city. Mount Roskill Road Board objected. The Auckland City Council, which formerly approved the idea, is now objecting. When the commission opened at the Magistrate's Court this morning, Mr. Milne represented the petitioners, Mr. Meredith the Mount Roskill Road Board, and Mr. Stanton the Auckland City Council. Mr. Meredith suggested that it would be convenient if the members of the commission were to go out to-day and make an inspection of the area concerned, and resume to-morrow morning for the taking of evidence. The evidence would be quite brief, and he understood that the whole matter could be disposed of in one day as far as the evidence was concerned. Mr. Stanton and Sir. Milne agreed to this course, and the commissioners fell in with the suggestion. It was agreed that a representative of each at the three parties concerned in the dispute should accompany the commissioners on their visit.
