MOTOR TRAFFIC CONTROL
COST OF COUNTY INSPECTORS. FIXING OF SPEED LIMITS. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) , . PAEROA, this day. Recently the District Highways Council decided to recommend the Main Highways Board to group the counties in the Auckland province so as to share the cost of traffic inspectors. The decision was communicated to the Ohinemui'i County Council yesterday. In a letter to the council the Minister of' Transport, Hon. W. A. Veitch, said one of .the first matters requiring urgent consideration was the motor vehicles regulation for the fixing of local speed limits, the requirements of which did not seem to be clearly understood by' many local bodies. As a result prosecutions for breaches often failed. The desirability of having a uniform system for determining speed limits throughout the Dominion was obvious. Co-operation with those concerned was sought, particularly in the removal of the many out-of-date and unnecessary speed limits and other signs. These were quite useless for the purpose of supporting prosecutions, and only resulted in confusion and non-observance of the authorised signs. It was suggested that in future relative by-laws be submitted to him before they were passed by the local body. Mr.. Eobinson said that a conference of local bodies at Paeroa had failed to agree on the question of sharing the cost of a traffic inspector, and the matter had been referred to the Highways Council, which had decided to group counties and recommend the Main Highways Board I to appoint and subsidise the wages of traffic inspectors for groups of three and four. The Ohinemuri County had been grouped with the Thames and Coromandel Counties, which would shortly be called upon to share the cost of a traffic inspector. The correspondence was received.
