LEAGUE OF PENWOMEN
The final meeting of the literary study 'Section of the League of New,. Zealand Penwonien for 1929 .took place during the week, when Miss'Oona Burton, convener of the; section, delighted members and friends with an; interesting lecture upon Shakespeare's heroines. The speaker divided the characters into two sections, the wronged heroines and the bright,", witty, girlish ones. Short scenes from the plays were acted by the members in order as the lecturer expounded the different characters. The following members took part: Desdemona ("Othello"), Miss Sweet; Hermione ("Winter's Tale"), Mrs. Helen Griffiths; Cordelia ("King Lear"), Miss Spurting;' Duke and Viola ("Twelfth Night"), Misses Dash and Peacock; Ferdinand and Miranda ("The Tempest"), Mrs. Spinley and Miss Burton; Ophelia ("Hamlet"), Miss Peacock; Juliet and nurse ("Romeo and Juliet"), Misses Burton and Sweet; Rosalind and Celia ("As You Like It"), Mrs. Richmond and Miss Spurting; Benedick and Beatrice ("Much Ado About Nothing"), Mrs. , Schmitt and Miss Greville; Portia ("The Merchant of Venice"), Miss Bertram; Katherine ("Taming of the Shrew"), Miss Quill; Macbeth and Lady Macbeth ("Macbeth"), Mrs. Helen Griffiths and Miss Burton.
