IN DEFENCE OF "EDENDALE."

A correspondent says the district of Edcndale originated in Paterson Street, and that the name belongs to Edendale South. In opinion, Edendale was a settled district before Paterson Street was on the map or even thought of. The old pioneers were strong characters and much too independent to appropriate the name of a place hundreds of miles away In the South Island. If we mind our own business properly we need not worry about Edendale. South. It is true that Edendale, Auckland, has greatly advanced since the trams came out, but Edendale was in existence long before they came. This fact can be proved by a glance at the foundation stone of the Edendale School, which was built for the children of Edendale in 1911. The name "Edendale" is not responsible for mistakes made because letters are wrongly addressed. No confusion would occur if letters were correctly addressed to "Edendale, Auckland." "Sandringham" may mean "sunny," but we have a Maori nan: a which is jußt as good—"Rawhiti," meaning "sunshine." I think we are very fortunate in having the name wo have. NEW ZEALANDER.
