ABSENT WITHOUT LEAVE.

SHIP'S COOK PUNISHTD. Phillip William Chilman, aged 35, apepared at the Police Court this morning on a charge of being absent without leave from the liner Earanga on November 4.

A representative of the vessel's local agents said Chilman signed on the Earanga at Glasgow, as chief cook for the round voyage. When the ship was at Auckland he deserted. The company had to find a substitute at considerable expense. Some time ago the company assisted the passage of accused's wife and two children to England.

"I signed on the Gallic, another ship belonging to the same company, at Auckland, and I was entitled to my passage back," said Chilman.

However, the magistrate told him that he signed on at Glasgow for the round voyage and failed to carry out his obligations. Chilman was convicted and ordered to pay expenses amounting to £2 10/- and also to forfeit two days' pay.
