BOILING BITUMEN.
CAUSES GAB,AGE FIRE. OUTBREAK ON WATERFRONT. Boiling bitumen caused a minor outbreak of fire on the roof of the Ferry Garage, opposite the Sailors' Home, oil the waterfront, shortly before mid-day. The City Fire Brigade had the flames under control within a few minutes. Workmen were engaged upon the roof and several tins of bitumen were being heated when the bottom of a tin fell out, and the bitumen came in contact with a naked light. There was an immediate flare-up, and a prompt call was put through to the brigade. Underneath the spot where the flareup occurred there was a petrol filling station and a number of cars were parked in the garage. The premises have through connection from Little Queen Street, and the garage, which has only one storey, is one of the oldest in Auckland.
