Cargo Steamer Strikes On Rock In Table Bay.

CREW SAVED. (Received 9.30 a.m.) CAPETOWN", October 29. The Hypatia (5728 tons), which is in the direct cargo service with New York, grounded on Whale Rock a mile off Eobbcn Island at the entrance to Table Bay at five in the morning in a mist. She arrived six weeks ago and went as far as Beira, where she loaded a. large quantity of copper ore and also hides at coastal ports, and was fully loaded. She is now firmly fixed on the rocks.

The vessel has a crew of 75, fifteen of whom arc white. There was no panic and two life-boats were rowed to the mainland. Tugs were sent out for the remainder of the crew. The officers' belongings and the ship's papers were salved. Owing to the swell it was impossible to approach the rock, which is tearing out the bottom of the Hypatia. She will probably be a total wreck.
