HIGH COMMISSIONER'S CABLE

The Department of Agriculture has received the following cablegram, dated October 26, from the High Commissioner for New Zealand, London:— Tallow.—No auction owing to lack of fresh material. The spot market is quiet at about the last quotation. Eggs.—Quotations advanced but the market is quiet. Present quotations are: English, 24/ to 32/ a long 100; Dutch and Danish, 19/ to 24/; Belgium, 14/6 to 18'; Australian and South African, 15/ to' 17/6; Polish, 11/ to 13/. Apples—Market firm for case varieties, American and Canadian Jonathan making 15'' to 17/6, and Newton Pippin 14/ to 16/. Barrel trade slow. Nova Scotian Ribston Pippin, 24/ to 25/; King David and Blenheim, 24/. Hemp.—Manila: Easier this week. Closing values for J grade, DecemberFebruary shipments, £35 10/. Sisal: Market quiet. Fair average quality No. 1 sold at £38 15/, and No. 2 at £37 5/. Good marks quoted, nominal, No. 1, £39 15/ to £40, and No. 2, £3S 5/ to £38 10/. New Zealand: Market very dull and a little easier, in sympathy with Manila. Nominal comparative closing values are: High points, £33 10/; fair, £30 10/; common, £29. Tow. —Second Grade. £21 10/; third grade, £18; November-January shipments. Wool—Bradford top makers very firm, with Merino tops, but little business doing in crossbred, except in inferior quality. Present quotations for tops are: 64's warp. 2/11 to 2/11% per lb; average, 2/10 to 2/10%; 56's, 2/2; 50's, prepared, 1/11; 40's, prepared, 1/3. PRICES OF METALS. LONDON, October 28. There is fair inquiry for immediate requirements. WHEAT. Cargoes are firm at 6d to I'/ dearer following upon the additional support by the American Farm Board Relief Bill. Buyers, however, are content to deal in cheap near-at-hand River Plate cargoes and offers of Continental descriptions. Parcels are in good demand at 1/ advance, Manitobas at 6d dearer. One La Plata parcel by the Port Curtis realised 42/. Futures — London - October, 48/4 per quarter; November, 48/2; December, 48/8; January, 49/4. Liverpool: October, 8/9% per cental; December, 9/1; March, 9/8 1 /i; May, 9/11%. DAIRY PRODUCE. Joseph Nathan and Company, Limited, received the following advice yesterday from their London office:—Butter, 180/. Cheese, white, 94/; coloured, 93/. Both markets are slow. Messrs. Newton, King, Ltd., have received the following cable from their principals, Messrs. R. and W. Davidson, Ltd., dated October 29:— Butter—Market quiet. 177/ to 182/. Cheese.—Market quietly steady. Coloured, 93/; white, 94/. AUSTRALIAN WOOL SALES. SYDNEY, October 29. At the wool sales 10,881 bales were sold. The market was very firm at late rates. There wa3 good general competition. Greasy Merino brought 20% d. It is reported from Melbourne that the wool prices there are firm, with a hardening tendency, and excellent competition.
