LONG-DISTANCE TALK.

IMPROVED TELEPHONES

TWO NEW "CARRIER" SYSTEMS

(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)

WELLINGTON, this day,

Further improvements in the (speech efficiency of long-distance telephone lines have been made. The Postmaster-General, the Hon. J. 13. Donald, said to-(lay that with.a view to effecting a further improvement in the speech efficiency of the network of long-distance telephone lines in the North Island, the Post and Telegraph Department has installed two additional carrier current toll systems, one between Napier and Palmcrston [North and the other between Palmcrston North- and Hawera. The two systems, which were brought into commission last week, are "iving very satisfactory service, and have "effected a marked improvement in telephone communication between the Taranaki and Hawkc's Bay districts, as well as from such districts to Wellington, Mastorton, Auckland and Hamilton respectively. Hitherto telephonic conversation over ordinary wire circuits between New Plymouth and Napier, Napier and Auckland, Napier and Wellington anc^ Hawera and Auckland has frequently been a matter of difficulty, but with the installation of the Hawera-Palinerston North and Palmcrston North-Napier carrier systems conversation between the places mentioned can now be carried on with perfect ease. "Some idea of the improvements that these carrier current systems have effected," added the Minister, "may be gleaned from the fact that the speech volume between' Napier and New Plymouth has been more than trebled, that between Napier and Auckland and Napier and Wellington has been doubled, and that between New Plymouth and Wellington and New Plymouth and Auckland has increased by about oO per cent."
