INDECENT ASSAULT CHARGE.

The first case heard was a charge of indecent assault on a boy of 14 against Alfred Carter (29). The charge was heard by Mi'. Justice Smith and a. jury of 12. Mr. V. N. Hubble represented the Crown and Mr. Noble apepared for accused. Outlining the nature of the alleged offence, Mr. Hubble said that accused had advertised in oue of the daily newspapers for a boy. The advertisement had read: "Boy or youth wanted for city, £1 a week, all expenses paid.' About a dozen boys had applied and accused had selected one. After taking the lad to some friends at A von dale, accused took the boy to his room in a Hobson Street boarding house, where it was alleged the offence had taken place. In his statement to the police accused had denied the allegation, although he had admitted and agreed with a good deal, of the boy's statement. The jury returned a verdict of guilty after an hour and a half's deliberation. Carter was remanded for sentence until Saturday. . \<
