LAWN TENNIS.

OTAHUHU CLUB'S OPENING,

Yesterday marked the twenty-second official opening of the Otahuhu Tennis Club. The chip courts were in perfect condition and reflected the greatest credit on the club officials. Unfortunately, as 011 the two previous occasions, the function was marred by unfavourable weather. Mr. G. H. M. Muir, president, extended a cordial welcome to visitors from the Mangere Bast, Papatoetoe and East lnmakl Chiles. He mentioned that the club finances were in a healthy condition and that the membership was taxed to its fullest capacity. He regretted to state that many applications for membership were lying on the table.

Mr. E. Hickson, the president of the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association, recalled the time when his grandparents owned the land on which the courts now stand. He mentioned that the association had started- a system whereby each member ol the primary schools was rcceiviiii* instruction in tlio handling of a racquet and in the correct way of playing shots. Kererring to the outstanding success of the lirst New Zealand secondary schools' championships held in Wellington last year lie hoped that this -season each boy in the secondary schools would receive instruction 111 stroke production.

Mr. Muir then called on Mrs. T. Whitolv | a member of the elub since its inception,' to play the first ball. Owing to the inclemenuc.y of tlio weather the players •were unable to complete the scheduled four rounds of a progressive tournament. Th» results were declared on the first two rounds of play, but unfortunately players in the third section only completed one round. Misss C. Ryburn, of the Otnliuhu Club, with the possible of eight games carried off the trophy in the ladies' division! Mr B. Chalmers, of the Mangere Eas<C üb, and Mr. D. Russell, of the Otaliuliu Club, were even for the men's honours. On calculating the number of games lost by each, the trophy was awarded to the Otaliuliu member.
