QUEEN'S UNUSUAL BOUQUET.

Just before the Queen left London she paid a surprise vis.it to the Foundling Hospital site, which is now used as a pla vground for children, states the London correspondent of "The Australasian." ' She was offered an unusual bouquet on this occasion, for when she went over to the corner of the grounds "Ivliich is reserved for young and delicate children one of the smaller babies came forward with a" hunch of weeds which she had picked herself. The Queen asked many questions about the children, and wanted to know all that Was being done for their welfare. This Foundling Hospital playground has only been opened recently, but it is already proving a success. The daily average attendance has been over 2000. Mrs. .Trevelyan, the chairman of the children's play centre committee, is in charge of the playground, and she says that all they want to do is to make the children happy. A good midday meal is provided at a charge of 4d each, and the smaller children are given half a pint of milk each on arrival. In the afternoon, too, the children rest for an h°.ui; on blankets placed under the trees. -Later the mothers call for them, and can rest there, too, for a while. The authorities say that they ' want the grounds to become a kind of children's playing green, on the. principle of the old village greens. Boads are becoming increasingly dangerous for children, and it is hoped that in the future this will be realised more fully and that every town-planning scheme will .provide playing greens for the poorer children.
