MOTOR CYCLE TRIAL
RELIABILITY TEST,
LONG WEEK-END TRIP.
The greatest motor cycle' reliability trial yet held in New Zealand of 460 miles, conducted by the Auckland Sports Motor Cycle Club, commenced in Auckland on-Saturday afternoon and ended last evening. The awards Avill not be made until reports are received from the various check stations. Large entries were received and the trial was an outstanding success. Nearly all the competitors rode into the city shortly after 5 o'clock last evening, muddy and tired after their gruelling journey.. Rain was encountered frequently. There were several "spills" on the unmetalled surfaces between Putaruru and Atiamuri, but there were no serious breakdowns, most of the mechanical faults being due to the severe shaking cycles received on the T'oads in the Tauranga district. Riders found these roads in a bad state of repair.
Competitors were dispatched from New market at I p.m. on Saturday and spent the night at Te Awamutu. On Sunday they travelled through Arapuni, Taupo and Rotorua to Tauranga. i Yesterday morning the return trip was commenced via Ivaimai Hills, Matamata, Morrinsville, Taupiri and Pokeno.. All the cycles were examined and tested on arrival in the city last evening. Four machines, those of W. Marett (3£ h.p. 8.5.A.), A. Tierney (7-9 h.p. HarleyDavidson), J. Carter (2f h.p. Calthorpe), and E. Sutherland (5-6 h.p. Indian Scout) lost no points for mechanical defects. Most of the points, in other cases, were lost for loose nuts or lost tool boxes or spokes.
