TREGONNELL'S BUNKERS.

LESS THAN A DAY'S SUPPLY.

VOYAGE FROM NAURU.

Less than a day's supply of coal wae in the bunkers of the steamer Tregonnell when she arrived at Auckland with her cargo of 7500 tons of phosphates from Nauru. On the twelve days' voyage the steamer experienced a sharp storm as she approached the New Zealand coast.

Bunkers were taken by the Tregonnell at Westport early in September, and the steamer was making the run to Nauru when suddenly she changed her course for Auckland to obtain medical attention for an engineer. After a race of 274 miles the steamer arrived off Rangitoto on the evening of September 16. The second engineer, who had a severe knife wound, died within half an hour of reaching port. The steamer left Auckland on. September 18 for Nauru, and, experiencing favourable weather conditions, loaded and left the island cn October 15. Eight days on the voyage she encountered a storm, and was steaming in heavy seas for almost three days. The effect was to seriously deplete the supply of coal, which had already been reduced by the extra steaming required to put into Auckland last month. *
