Trentham Races.

WELLINGTON'S SECOND

DAY.

Rona Hurdles To Brigadier Bill.—Vali Takes Trial Stakes.

(By Telegraph.—Special to •' Star.")

TRENTHAM. this day,

There is a very large Labour Day crowd present for the finale of the Wellington Racing Club's spring carnival. The weather is dull but fine, and the track is in tip-top order.

Considerable improvement in the jumping of Brigadier Bill saw him win the hurdles very decisively. Tresham. Kapuna and Beaumont were the favourites, and all were beaten, though Tresham would have been second had he made a good jump at the last, fence. Brigadier Bill led for five furlongs, and was then steadied, while Modern went to the front with Tresham and Askari. They led round the home turn from Novar, Brigadier Bill and Kapuna. Modern was disposed of at the last fence by Brigadier Bill, who went on to win by two lengths from Novar, who finished half a length in front of Tresham, with Modern right up. Kapuna and Askari were nexC and Beaumont, who ran a bad race, last.

Hector Gray Reappears. A shocking start, in the Spring Trial Stakes saw more than half the field left with hopeless prospects. Footpad and Imateagirl showed out first from Streamer and Rasouli, the hot favourite False Scent, being left standings At the end of a furlong Vali had run up fast, and joined Footpad in the lead from Imateagirl, Rasouli, Streamer, Arrowhead and' Roundelay. This was the order across the top, but entering the straight Rasouji was up with the leaders. Vali came on best, and although seriously challenged by Roundelay and Imateagirl, won all out by half a length from the former. Imateagirl was a length away third. Habit was a good fourth, with Air Laddie and Arrowhead in line. Then came.Emotion, Monaloff, Duellona, Australia and Rasouli. The race was spoiled by the dreadful Btart, but Vali's form entitled him to be considered a potential winner in any case. The race marked the reappearance of Hector Gray, who rode Rasouli. He received a great ovation on going out to mount, and he rode a good race. Count Palatine's Great Finish. Tho favourite, Count Palatine, staged a brilliant finishing run in the Hack Mile, and got ■up to win by a head. Rpyal Opera, Tigrano and Lucky Light" began best, and led from My Own, Austerity and Make Up, who were bunched. The second favourite, Royal Black, tailed off. Royal Opera and Lucky Light settled down in front frotn Tigrano, Austerity, Make Up and My Own, and there was no material change to the. straight, where Royal Opera and Lucky Light were still in charge from Austerity,' Tigrano, Make Up and My Own. Austerity came on tne Inner and had the race won when Count Palatine flashed up from the back and beat her by a head. Lucky Light was a length away, with Royal Opera fourth. Then, came Tigrano, Royal Black, Lynn Dhu, Tourist and My Own, bunched. The winner won brilliantly, and is a good and improving three-year-old.
