"HARD TACK."
GIFT FOR GOVERNOR-GENERAL.
A mysterious-looking parcel was handerl over by the president of the New Plymouth South African Veterans' Association (Mr. Reg. Pike) to the Gov-ernor-General when the latter was inspecting the veterans and returned soldiers in Pukekura Park last week. Sir Charles was observed to accept the gift with a sincere expression of appreciation, but not a little amusement. The parcel, which was the sequel to another presentation made to his Excellency some time ago, when he partook of afternoon tea with the South African veterans, contained a number of "hard tack" army biscuits. The previous presentation was a tin of bully beef, and on that occasion considerable regret was expressed by the veterans that the complementaiy biscuits Were not then obtainable. Otherwise they would have been presented at the time.
