UNITED PARTY'S TASK.

INHERITED DIFFICULTIES.

FINANCE AND UNEMPLOYMENT

CIVIL SERVICE SUPERANNUATION,

"We make no apologies; we simply state facts,''' declared the Hon. A. J, Stalhvorthy, Minister of Health, when replying to the toast of "Parliament" at the P. and T. Association's annual reunion on Saturday evening.

The Minister was explaining what the United Government was compelled to face when it took office eleven months as'o. First of all there was the deficit of £500,000. A sum of £29,000,000 had to be found for loan conversions, and there was also the unemployment problem. Taking a sound business view of things, there was £200,000 shortage in the reserves of the P. and T. Department. Again there were arrears in the superannuation fund, which' affected the whole of the public service in the Dominion. A sum approximating £1,500,000 had to be found before the United party could start any of its programme this year.
