TRANSPORT TROUBLE.

ALLIANCE CF LABOUR.

INTERVENTION IN DISPUTE.

CONFERENCE OVER WEEK-END,

The secretary of the Alliance of Labour (Mr. J. Roberts) arrived in Auckland on Saturday to handle the Tramway and Omnibus Employees' dispute with the Transport Board. In the evening he conferred with the district council of the Alliance, but no details of the deliberations were released for publication. There is reason to believe, however, that, while no negotiations between the parties were opened up over the weekend, there are prospects of an early settlement of the matters at issue. The dispute has been long drawn out, and originally arose out of. an appeal case and the calling by the board on the union to expunge a certain minute in which the latter censured certain members for supporting the management. The question of a new agreement then arose, and action was taken which practically amounted to a severance of relationships.

The breach between the two parties was widened when it became known that an application had been made to the Clerk of Awards to have the board added as a party to the Local Bodies' Labourers' Award. Last week the applica tion was withdrawn, and this fact was regarded as an initial move towards a settlement of the whole trouble. The intervention of the Alliance of Labour at all events is likely to bring the dispute to a head.

Discussing the week-end's developments, the secretary of the Tramways Union (Mr. J. Liddell) stated that a movement was being made Avhich it was hoped would lead to a settlement. However, there was nothing to report meantime. Although no information was available at the moment, it was possible that something would be revealed after the meeting of the Transport Board on Tuesday.
