RICCARTON TRACK WORK.

N.Z. CUP PRELIMINARIES

CATERPILLAR SHOWS FORM. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) CHRISTCHURCH. Saturday. It was dull and threatening when work started at Riccarton thia morning and it continued so all morning. The ovtside .trial grass track was was open for fast work, but except where mentioned it was not used. The trainers preferred the plough, which was in great order, but slow. The heavy atmosphere was all against fast times being registered. Honour and Jalcux were sent twice round together. The first was done at half' pace and the second at tlireequarter pace. Both horses were in good order: Chide, with a feather-weight up, galloped a mile and a half. He was galloping strongly at any stage, but not out to do his utmost. He took 2.50, and pulled up well.

Meprisant, who is booked to try for classic honours, covered* ten furlongs in 2.10, and did it very comfortably. He is improving steadily. Stately carried a feather-weight to the end of a mile in 1.44 2-5. It was a, good performance, for she finished particularly well. Sea Raid, with a small boy up, left a mile behind in 1.40* and could have done much better. 'She*will - be" ridden by a stable apprentice at. Rangiora on Monday. -\ ■ J •.'''''i Moratorium, who is'not ready, sprinted five furlongs in 1.0.. - ••. .-.', Chick wheat and . Malmsey," .carrying light-weight's, were together and not all out at the business end-of seven furlongs, in .1.33*. . ■ ■ ■ *','..••.;'■ •'" Caterpillar beat Kentish Lady pomtlessly over half a mile in /the brilliant time. of. 48 4-ss. Both were carrying feather-weights-. This was. done on the grass. . « ', : ■'. Spoon and The Geisha were separately sprinted over short courses, but they were not out to do their best. Dutch' Money finished well at the end of a gallop, over six furlongs on the grass.. Time, .1.17 2-5. Honeycomb was given, strong pace work, and Juniper also had an easy morning. This trio will not be racing at Rangiora; their trainer, W. G. Hobbs, having decided that Kindling is the-.only one of his team he will take there. '■ -,-. . .... - . ■: ..' Pharaoh and Tarquinius strode over a half mile together in 555. They were not nearly at top speed. Count Cavour and Amor, with light boys up, were scnt» over nine furlongs together. Count Cavour had the best of the argument. The last seven furlongs took L 32. Proud Knight/attracted attention by running six furlongs in a tick under LIS, with -a- light-weight up...... : Afer breakfast Ranelagh sprinted half mile.on the grass with'a'fair weight up;" in-51 l-ss, and did it; rather well. Page-Boy and-Fresh Breeze, with wel-ter-weights \ip, galloped six furlongs in 1.20, Pagei Boy having the advantage at the finish. ; - .- .-Coupon*. ,after' being: persuaded to go on to the track,, ran half a mile with a welter-weight w up in 525. • ,-. .Pangolin was going as well as Solgelc at the finish of five furlongs on the crass, which was run up the back in 1.5. Both geldings were all out. Master Clarence, showed more speed than Haze over the first three of six furlongs, but he tired in the run home, and Haze finished in front.. The last half mile took'sr4-'ss. "It was.'a,useful gallop, as "both Were carrying big weights.

;Gay Arrow'led Disoordia for the first two 'furlongs of a gallop over, five fur-longs,-but tired,'and'Discordia-was first home in 1.5. ' ' ' '' '', Pahatanui dashed over half a mile on the grass in 50 l-ss, and did it well. This gallop was done up the "back." ' Te Awhina and Bulolo Were matched over, a half mile on 'tli'e"'grass, with feather-weights up. Te Awhina broke away first', but was steadied, and Bulolo rushed past her. She caught him asrain a furlone from home, and finished in front. The time, 51s, was disappointing. .■•■ Red Heckle gave Aladdin several lengths' start in a sprint on the grass over four furlongs up the back. The nair finished "together in 49 4-os. Red Heckle looks very bright. Buoyant was sprinted five furlongs! He was all out at the finish, and the last three furlongs took 39 2-.ss.—' Rapier has not been sent home to his owner, . He is gallomnT round his n<vddock as sound as.a bell, as all the heft has gone out of; the;-bruised joint. H. Thurso .is considering putting the old horse into, work again. i
