HAMILTON PROBLEMS.

J CONGESTED MAIN STREET. ! SEVERAL PLANS TOR RELIEF. DIVERSION - 'OF''RAILWAY. (B.v Telegraph.-—Own Correspondent.) •■ ■;■'■: .• ■ " HAMILTON, this day. ! ■ Hamilton- has only one main street. This', while straight, wide and long, becomes very, congested, and. several projects have .been suggested for relief. ; * One proposal was that the railway line i between Frankton and Hamilton should be lowered), so that the north and south roads Vouldl run over viaducts above the liiicl All level crossings -would thus be eliminated. . The Railway Department rejected'.this': ' : ' . ■ ■ Secondly,, a traffic bridge was sug.gested ..for-the north end of the. town. It .would divert :a.great deal of traffic, and the borough engineer has been asked to investigate the possibilities. If arrangements could be mad© with the Railway Department the present railway bridge could be converted to a traffic bridge. The possibility is being considered of diverting the railway through the town, and a new railway bridge built further along the river, as the present bridge will have ;to be strengthened shortly to carry the new type of locomotive. A newbridge would also help to solve unemployment/ The matter will be discussed by the Minister shortly. Another plan is to cut away the hill at Garden Place, and continue Anglesea Street 'through to Ward Street, thus giving parallel traffic routes. Another plan, under consideration is a boulevard along the river bank. It is impossible to proceed with town planning until some arrangement has been come to with the Department. . The Borough Council decided last night to ask the Minister of Railways to allow departmental officers to investigate various schemes for an alternative traffic route. .
