NO WAGE REDUCTION.
SINGLE MEN ON RELIEF JOBS. GOVERNMENT'S POLICY. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.! WELLINGTON, Wednesday. The suggestion that the wages of single men on relief works should be reduced is not favoured by the Government. The Hon. R. Scott asked the Leader of the Legislative Council whether, In view of the economic condition of the Dominion and the urgent need 'for increased production, the time has not now arrived when the wages of single men employed by the Government on relief works should be immediately reduced in order to enable primary producers to obtain assistance so urgently needed at this season of the year. The wages now being paid to single men by fjie Government was inducing farm pmployeps to leavo their present employment in all parts of the Dominion. 'it is not considered that the scheme which the Government 19 adopting to nrovide work for unemployed will result in indncing farm employees to leave their employment," said the Hon. T. K. Sidey, in reply, "and as a matter of Government policy it if not proposed to reduce the wasres paid to single men placed on relief works."
