OBITUARY.
MRS. E. C. CHAMBERLAIN.
A very old resident of Auckland, Mr 3. Elizabeth Catherine Chamberlain, died on October 16 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. A. Laing, "Wbarenoho," Parnell, aged S7 years. She was the widow of the late Hon. Henry Chamberlain. M.L.C. They were married in England in 1559, and the year afterwards came to Auckland, via Melbourne, in the steamer Great Britain. Mrs. Chamberlain vas a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. George Hammond Heard, of Norfolk, England. The Hon. H. Chamberlain came to Auckland first in 1803, and bought large blocks of land at Drury and Kaglan. Later he returned Home and visited Palestine. After his return to Auckland, the Hon. Chamberlain bought a. large block of land at Hobsonville. He "v as called to the Legislative Council in 1869, and died in 18S8. Mrs. Laing is the only child. Mrs. Chamberlain in her younger years took part in the social life of Auckland, and was often a guest at Government House during the period of the earlier Governors. Deceased was a most charitable woman, but her donations were only known to the recipients and her relatives. The interment was at St. Thomas' Cemetery, Tamaki, this afternoon, after a service at St. Mary's Cathedral.
