GOOD WITH YOUNG ONES

Though J. McKendrick would not claim to be an expert trainer, there is no question about .him being able to handle and educate young pacers._ Anything he knows he has taught himself, and therefore he is to be congratulated upon his success. It was he who educated the smart Free Advice, and though nobody thought so at the time, her subsequent form showed that had she not skipped less than a furlong from home she may have opened her racing career with a win in the Great Northern Derby. Choysa, a smart filly, who unfortunately died on Saturday, and Student Prince, who has won at his only start, are two move who were put through their facings by J. McKendrick before they were sent South to J. Bryee. Latterly McKendrick .has put in a lot of time'with the Blue Mountain King filly First Flight, and her easy win 011 Saturday is another merit mark for the methods of McKendrick. First Flight is now with F. Smith, but the credit for making her a racehorse goes to J. McKendrick. There is no question about her being good, and two days before the relief fund meeting she worked a mile and a half, the first mile easy, but came come the last half in 1.5. Just before the Waikato meeting she strolled a mile and a half in 3.36 and never appeared to be going at more than three-quarter pace. All going well she should be able to run a merry twelve furlongs when she lines up for the Derby at Christmas.
