GREAT PETER DISAPPOINTS.
When Great Peter closed his three-year-old career, during which period he won, among other races, the Great Northern Derby and the Champion Stakes at Christchurch, big things were predicted for the brother to Great Bingen. These predictions have not been fulfilled and his form for some time has been a complete disappointment. His owner has displayed a preference for two-mile journeys with the son of Nelson Bingen, but each time he has failed badly. In his latest effort, in the Mark Memorial, at Hamilton, he was pacing along with the leaders in the early stages, but over the last mile he was never threatening, to take a part in the finish, and he was well back long before the straight was reached. Great Peter looks the goods, and perhaps when stepped out over a sprint journey there may be a different story to tell. He is handicapped on the front of a 2.50 mile and a quarter at the Auckland meeting, and he should be able to go at a 2.10 rate for ten furlongs. He is also in the 4.39 two miles, but maybe his owner will take on the sprint on this occasion.
