FRAUD ALLEGED.

ELDERLY WOMAN CHARGED.

COMMITTED FOR TRIAL,

Charges of making a false order and causing a company to act upon it as if genuine, forging the name of E. Shelton to an endorsement of a cheque for £18 fl/4, and theft of a letter containing a cheque for £1S 9/4, were brought against an elderly woman, Sarah Jane Brown, on summons, at the Police Court this morning. "This is an awkward case,'\?aid Chief Detective Hammond. "This woman has been living in a house owned by Shelton and it is alleged that she got hold of a cheque posted to Shelton, and, although it was not negotiable, she was paid out on it." Mr. Singer, who appeared for the woman, said he believed her when she denied the alleged offences. Unfortunately the charges could not be reduced so that they could be dealt with summarily by the magistrate. In a statement which she made to Detective Snedden, accused said that a man, who had stayed at the house one night, took charge of two packets which had been addressed to Shelton. i She pleaded not guilty to all charges j and was committed to the Supreme Court for trial. Bail was allowed.
