CANADA'S FOREIGN TRADE.

BACON FOR BRITAIN. VANCOUVER, September 19. A lively controversy is in progress in Canada relative to increasing the Dominion's exports overseas, particularly butter and bacon, with an improvement in sales on the London market in view. Significant, indeed, was an article in the Independent French-Canadian journal "La Presse," dealing with the subject, in which the writer said:—"We should be able to sell ten ; times as much bacon in the British market, instead of letting NewZealand and Denmark get ahead of us. Is there any explanation why we should not be dispatching more than forty million pounds of bacon to Britain, when nine years ago we were exporting 245,000,0001b? It is true that domestic consumption, intensified by the, growing tourist trade, has increased enormously, but surely this is only one more reason why we should develop this lucrative industry in proportion." Anent Canada's foreign trade, another French-Canadian Independent newspaper, "Ottawa Droit," says: "The whole problem of our national economy is summed up in the following formula: Reduce our imports. We import coal and iron, and those who succeed in producing these for us in Canada at a price which will compete with those products from the United States will give us real economic independence. We also import too many manufactured products, dairy products and live 6tock. Our considerable exports of grain scarcely suffice to leave us a meagre balance on the right side every year. The situation would change entirely if we were to limit our purchases from abroad to a still greater degree."
