ROAD CYCLING.

PALMERSTON TO WELLINGTON HTJSSEY NEVER HEADED. LUKEY THIRD AND FASTEST. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Sunday. The fourth annual Palmerston North to Wellington road cycle race was decided vesterday under fairly good conditions. The roads, with the exception of the stretch to Foxton, were in good order. There was an absence of wilid until the competitors reached the top of the Paekakariki Hill, where they ran into a growing southerly. W. Hussev, Foxton, started off the limit mark, and from beginning to end led the field unaccompanied after the first mile. At one minute to 9 a.m. the competitors were dispatched from the Square in Palmerston North. Hussey established an exceptionally fast journey to Foxton, passing this point over IS minutes ahead of his co-marker. Passing through the Foxton township the scratch men had gained two minutes on the 10-minute riders, and Lukey and Gane were doing most of the work. Hussey reached Levin at 11.7 a.m., after covering the 37 miles unaccompanied in good time. Blakeway and W. Collins, Palmerston North, who were off the 17-minute mark, rode steadily through Levin 51 minutes after the limit man had passed. There was still no appearance of the 15 10-minute inen and the scratch riders. Stiff Climb Up Hill. Hussey reached Paraparaumu at 12.50. Between Levin and Otaki the scratch men caught up with the 15-ininute and 10-minute riders. On the run to Paekakariki Hussey made good time and commenced the task of climbing the hill at a steady pace. Riding, running, and at times walking, the 17-year-old champion at length reached the top at 1.37 p.m. Tasker reached the top 20 minutes after Hussey. Lukey, Webber and Blakeway commenced the climb in a determined fashion and performed the feat of reaching the top without once leaving their saddles. The leader, on the descent of the hill and on the run around Paremata Bay, was doing a good 20 miles an hour, and tackling the inclines met with in that locality in a very determined manner. Eventually reaching, the Basin Reserve, he circled the track and crossed the finishing line, after having covered practically the entire distance unaccompanied. Changes in Rear Division. Changes were taking place among the rear markers. Tasker had tired after descending the big hill and was caught by the back markers, Lukey and Webber. A hundred yards from the [line Webber put in his final efTort and crossed two lengths ahead of Lukey. The next rider to show up was Tasker.
