BLAZE AT KAWHIA.

STORE AND SALOON BURNED.

(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) KAWHIA, this day,

A large two-storeyed building owned and occupied by Mr. Rex Nesbit was destroyed by fire about 3 a.m. on Sunday. The premises Avere used as a store and billiard saloon, and Mr. Nesbit was sleeping upstairs. Aroused by intense heat he seized a suitcase containing money and a few articles of clothing and escaped through a window and over the top of the verandah. Adjacent buildings, including the Bank of New Zealand, the Hotel Tainui, and Mr. J. P. Robertson's motor garage, were for a time in danger, but a timely change of wind averted any serious damage outside of Mr. Nesbit's property. The building and contents were insured for £1300.

SUBURBAN CALLS.

Two calls were received by the Takapuna Fire Brigade during the week-end. A false alarm to the tennis courts in Byron Avenue was received at 10.45 on Saturday night, and at 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon a gorse fire at the top of Sheriff's Hill was attended to. brigade had the fire under control before it had any chance of spreading.

NGARUAWAHIA HOUSE LOST.

(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) NGARUWAHIA. this day. A four-roomed unoccupied house in Durham Street, Ngaruawahia, was practically destroyed by fire about one o'clock on Sunday morning. The house was owned by Mr. Clayton.
