ON THE JOB.

AUCKLAND UNEMPLOYED FIFTY MEN START WORK. ON ROTORUA RAILWAY. SEVEN MILES FROM CAMBRIDGE. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) CAMBRIDGE, Friday. Yesterday there passed through Cambridge on lorries about fifty men from the ranks of Auckland's unemployed proceeding to their job on the Karapiro stretch of the Auckland -Rotor ua,, main highway, about seven miles from Cambridge. This stretch of road from beyond the Karapiro factory to the cross-roads has long been a nightmare to careful motorists, being among the most tortuous on the whole length of the highway. It was recently surveyed and the gang's job is to straighten the stretch by cutting back several of the "hair-pin" corners and widening in other parts. The Public Works Department, besides finding work for . the unemployed, is making much-needed improvements in carrying out the general policy of the Highways Board to make the arterial roads safer for the rapidly-increasing traffic. The gang of men is shortly to be augmented to 100 in strength. The men are a likely-looking lot and when seen by the "Star" correspondent were tackling their job in good style. r
