WELLINGTON'S STATION. CABINET.APPROVES LAYOUT. CLOSE TO FERRY WHARF BUILDING OF SEVEN STOREYS. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) , WELLINGTON, this day. Cabinet has approved the Bunny Street site (contiguous to the Lyttelton ferry wharf) for the new Wellington Railway Station, and the general layout of goods yards on the reclamation at Thorndon. This announcement was made yesterday by the Minister of Railways, the Hon. W. B. Taverner, who also made available the text of his considered reply to the Mayor of Wellington. He intimated that he was not.prepared to set up a commission, as suggested, to investigate the question of the site.of the station (Davis Street, in close proxitity to the present Thorndon Station, proposed), and the proposed establishment of yards at Petprie. The Minister stated that in designing the station building provision had been made for adequate and up-to-date railway facilities on the' ground floor, including refreshment rooms, shops, etc. The building would consist of five storeys, and the plans. revealed that it would have a dignified and impressive appearance. At the same time an endeavour had been made to combine simplicity with utility throughout, and no items were of an extravagant nature. The Minister mentioned that overhead access across the yards to the waterfront area at Davis Street will be provided. Provision will also be made in the plans for future access to the Hutt Road from the waterfront area, but this bridge will not be built immediately, the traffic at present not justifying this being done. It is intended to proceed at once with the erection of a modern goods shed, as part of the scheme decided upon. There will be ten passenger platforms at the station. The longest will be 1000 feet. It is proposed to provide a great plaza on the Bunny Street frontage, 300 ft by 300 ft. This' will provide a circulating area for trams, buses, motors and pedestrians. The front is in a direct line with several streets radiating out into the city. ■ .
