"MEMORIAL" TRAIN.
LAST FROM HUKERENUI. UNPROFITABLE RUN STOPPED SCHOOL CHILDREN SUFFER. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WHANG Alt 31, this day. A memorial train, its engine bedecked with ribbon and carrying an imitation tombstone inscribed, "In memory of tne Hukerenui service" pulled into Wha-no-axei station at 5.40 this morning. It was the last train to run directly from Hukereniri to Whangarei, for, aftw many years, the service has been discontinued Tbd morning train will o;ily run jr. tcfus from Waro. leaving at 7.30 a.m. The 4.15 return train from Whangarei will cease to rim. The alteration has been made in accordance with the Railway Department's policy of cutting down unprofitable services. The staff of seven, stationed at the Hukerenui terminus, lias been transferred. It has been found impossible to secure an alternative means of communication for the children from Hukerenui and Whakapara, who attended the High School, and in most cases their secondary education has been stopped.
