BRICK AREA BY-LAWS.

DARGAVILLE DISPUTE. COUNCILLORS AT LOGGERHEADS. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) DARGAVILLE, this day. A proposal submitted to the Dargaville Borough Council by Mr. D. L. Ross, that the by-laws governing building in brick should be amended, did not receive the approval of the council. "I cannot for the life of me understand where some councillors get the humour to submit proposals like these," said Mr. A. C. Ball. "I know where Mr. Ross gets his." Mr. Ross: Where? Mr. Ball: Well, I recall that some time ago you went down to meet Harry Lauder. Mr. Ross: Oh, ridiculous! I call ti point of order, Mr. Mayor.

The Mayor ruled that Mr. Ball must keep to the point.

Mr. Ball said that the Mayor had exhibited tlio propensities of a "quickchange artist" in respect of his previous attitude, and now in his association with the present proposals. "If we did a dastardly thing like this what would the people think of us? I think the whole tiling is grotesque." He moved a resolution, "That this council is of the opinion that the brick area by-law is a good one and will not agree to any alteration of the conditions imposed by its provision."

Mr. Hosking proposed as an amendment that the question be deferred, but he dicl not get a seconder.

Mr. Ross said that the council was sitting in special meeting and he did not think that Mr. Ball's motion could be accepted.

The Mayor said he was prepared to accept the resolution, and in doing so ho took exception to Mr. Ball's personal references to himself. He said that he had been a member of the committee which had brought down the proposals, but it did not follow necessarily that all members of that committee were in accord with all the details.
