"BETTER TIMES" BAZAAR.
IN AID OF CITY MISSION. OPENED YESTERDAY. In opening the "Better Times" bazaar at the Town 'Hall yesterday afternoon, Mr. A. J. Entrican, the Deputy-Mayor, said that, in spite of the temporary discouragement of unemployment, he was sure that there were times ahead in keeping with the title of the bazaar which he was about to -open. Speaking for the people of Auckland as well as I for the City Council, he was pleased to declare the fair officially open. He apologised for the inability of Mr. E. J. Phelan to be present to perform the opening ceremony, as was previously arranged. The Rev. Jasper Calder, city missioner, thanked Mr. Entrican for his interest in the mission, and asked him to express to the City Council the mission's appreciation for assistance received. With the hopefully suggestive name of "Slipusaquid" on lier bows, and a
cargo of utility articles and eatables in her hold, a large wooden steamer, built on the lines of a modern vessel, was at once an innovation and a great attraction. Constructed by the men's guild of the mission, the ship is 70ft long, 18ft wide, and is fitted up with cabins —each of which is a stall —funnels, masts, and even lifeboats.
Stalls of all varieties were available to the purchaser, and many were organised by suburban and country parishes.
The fair will be continuous until Saturday night, and if yesterday's response from the public is maintained, it will be eminently successful. Funds are in aid of the Auckland City Mission.
