COST OF MAINTENANCE. Recently the chairman of the Hospital Board spent an evening at the doss house conversing with the large number of men who sleep there. He found it was quite true, as stated by the recent deputation of Auckland members who waited on Sir Joseph Ward in regard to the matter, that about fifty per cent of tho=e in the place were ex-service men, some of whom had reached officer's rank. The men seemed pleased to see Mr. "Wallace and told him to stir the Government up to get some development work started. The chairman found out that it cost £5 per day to rrrn the place, as two meals were sup-plied to those who needed them, which mmrst that £35 per week was required.
