WATER FOR SCHOOLS.
SUPPLY COST FOR. BATHS. OFFICIAL ATTITUDE ■UNCERTAIN. REFERRED TO EDUCATION BOARD. In reply to the Auckland Primary School Committees' Association's request that the cost of water for school swimming baths be met by Government grant, the Auckland Education Board advised that it had made representations to the Government but the Education Department, under date of July 22, regretted it could ,not agree to the proposal.- The ending was: "The Department is of opinion that it is not unreasonable to expect the old pupils and others. who use the baths, to contribute towards the cost of water." A further communication from the Minister of Education, dated September 12, pointed out that if the Education Board made a favourable recommendation, he would give the request careful attention." The Hon. H. Atmore, however, mentioned that he understood most school baths were also used by the general public, and he could not.at present see that the Education ? Department should provide the whole cost of the •water. , „'\ , The association last evening decided to refer the matter back for the Education Board's reconsideration, emphasising that all water should'be provided free of cost to schools.
