STANDFAST ALSO GOES WELL. ii The spring meeting of the Avondale u Jockey Club will open on Saturday, and d the final gallops took place this morn- ■- ing. At Ellcrslio the course proper, with the flags 35ft out from the rails, e was open for fast work, and the No. 3 grass and hurdle track were also avail- . able. The going was good and probe ably better than at any time since the ° season opened. 1 Course Proper. s Welkne was first out, and accomt plished a seven-furlong task in 1.37 3-5. Roman Pearl was several lengths in front of Catoma at the end of five furlongs, in 1.7 2-5. Bizarro defeated Diamond Queen in a half-mile sprint, which occupied 52 l-ss. Dark Prince took 1.9 3-5 to run five furlongs. Leader and Amor jumped off together at the six-furlong post, and after covering the first three furlongs in 395, finished up their task ,in 1.20 4-5. They were on terms when . the post was reached, and both did their work well. Sir Archie had Kauri Park as a companion over a round, which they traversed in 2.12 2-5, the last six furlongs taking 1.26 2-5. Hannibal and Wild Country dashed over three furlongs in 40s. Measurer and Spring Abbey took 52 2-5s to run half a mile. Lady's Boy was going nicely beside Tukunoa over the same distance in 52 2-ss. The two-year-olds Ruling King, Rafflight, Thcspis and Tremetus jumpeu away at the mile-post and ran three furlongs along the back in 37 l-ss. Ruling King began best ans was slightly in front at the finish,' although Tremetus, who did not get away too well, ran up to him at the end of a furlong, and was practically alongside him when the five-fii'rlong post was reached. Spring Song, Thais and Speak Out ran four furlongs in 56 3-ss. They went from the half-mile peg to the winning post. Spring Song did best. The Jumpers. j Adjuster (Nightingale) gave a safe > display over four schooling hurdles. Marita (J. Burgess) had Tin Whistle ; (E. Garrett) as a companion over the i steeplechase fences on the fiat. Both jumped well. Tin Whistle repeated the i performance, Calithe (R. Olive) going , with him on the second occasion. Both i gave a satisfactory display. WORK AT AVONDALE. CRIMESTOR GOES FAST. The course proper, about 55ft out from the rails, was available for fast work at Avondale this morning, and the ; going was good. Cylinder appeared to be holding Appeal safely at the end of half a-mile, run in 53 l-ss. Piuthair was not doing her best to run a mile in 1.54 4-ss. Star Stranger was sent a mile, being joined by Historic over the last seven furlongs. The full distance took 1.50 l-ss, and the last seven furlongs 1.34 4-5. Both went well. Chief Link and Lineage, two two-year-olds, ran three furlongs in 37 3-ss. There was not much between them at the finish, but Chief Link appeared to be doing it best when the post was reached. Bob Amans and Crown Arch covered half a-mile in 53 l-ss. False Scent defeated Knightlike over five furlongs in 1.5 4-5. ' There was not much between Single- 1 ton and Maori Boy at the end of seven ' furlongs in 1.34 3-5. Oil King pleased better than Orapai and Huntique at the finish of half a- 1 mile in 53 4-ss. Maurieana and Appellant from a ; slow start ran six furlongs in 1.21 2-5. Set Fair and Running Over, two two-years-olds, who hail from Gisborne, cach 1 lan half a-mile separately, the former taking 53 4-ss, and Running Over 54 4-ss. Silver mine beat Te Atiawa at the end of nve furlongs in 1.8. Silvermine appeared to be easing up at the finish. { Takamnga ran three furlongs in 40s.
