TRADE WITH CANADA.

{\3EWv SHIPPING SERVICE. CANADIAN COMPANY'S BOATS. EXPORT OF FROZEN MEAT. (By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.) • . WELLINGTON, Tuesday. Expressing the hope that nothing would be'-; dune to injure the Dominion's trade with Canada, the Minister-of Industries and Commerce (Hon. J. G. Cobbe) stated in the. House of Representatives to-day that the 1 Government had been informed that four large steamers equipped with refrigeration .j plant would bo placed in service be- | tween New Zealand and Canada by the | Canadian National Railway Company it I an assurance was given that frozen meat would be'dispatched by those vessels at the existing rates. The question was raised by"-, Mr.' W. J. Broadi'oot .-.(Waitomu', who asked the Minister whether the present shipping service between Canada and New Zealand was satisfactory; ' The Canadian Government had treated New Zealand very well, said Mr. Cobbe. For some 1 time past the Canadian Railways Company had been .running steamers .to New Zealand, but only limited refrigerated space was available. Little more than f>()(lO carcases could be shipped at one time. New, however, it was suggested that four large steamers should be .put on this run. The vessels would call at New Vork, Boston, Halifax and Montreal. Such a. service would be of .meat value in building up trade between New Zealand, the United States and Canada. The only condition laid down by Hhe company was that a failshare of New Zealand's frozen meat trade should be provided. "1 referred the company's representative to the Meat Board/' said Mr. Cobbe, "and I understand he is also getting in touch with the Dairy Beard. The ships would take twelve months to build, and Che service would be started if the company was assured of a Fair share of the frozen meat trade at- "-.. ,-..,.. ~n f n s Ps those >in opera* s "*' ' ■•• The Mniistar pmji. c ,. wi-dom of the Me;:! !si.;rd. mid hoped that nothing would be done to prejudice -development of the traij—

The company which would run this service owned its own wharves and railways, said Mr. Cobbc, and in addition it h'ad a great chain of hotels. It was probable that great quantities of the lamb exported from New Zealand would be used in those hotels, and if that were the case it would be of great value to the Dominion.
