LINCOLN COLLEGE.
STATE GRANT REQUESTED. PREMIER SYMPATHETIC. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. In. response to the request that the Government should make an annual statutory grant of £3100 to Lincoln Agricultural College, the Prime Minister, Sir Joseph Ward, gave an assurance to-day to a deputation from the board of governors, which waited on him and the Ministers of Agriculture and Education, that Cabinet would look upon the matter with a favourable eye. Introducing the deputation, Mr. M. S. Kyle, M.P., stated that recently four members of the staff had left the college on account of greater inducements elsewhere.
Mr. D. Buddo, M.P., - said it was .a reflection on the education system if Lincoln College CQiild not be maintained efficiently.
Mr. Denhain and Mr. C. M. Hewlett stressed the nature of the work being done by the college and the value of science to farming. The necessity of trained men was now generally recognised; they said. Sir Joseph said the dase made out was worthy of the utmost consideration. He could not give a definite reply at that stage, as the matter would have to go before Cabinet. He recognised the extreme value of higher education in , connection with the. agricultural pursuits of the Dominion. Lincoln College was there to et'ay, and the deputation could take it that it would not. be turned down by the Government. He knew" the position the college was inj and- something had to be done to give it renewed life.
